There are different scale rankings, from S to ee88 E, with S being the most effective, and E being the least. Many players — even the experienced ones — will opt to focus only on upgrading strength or vitality. While these are useful in keeping your health and damage output high, you should not neglect to put some stat points into Endurance, which determines your stamina. Pretty much every type of movement will deplete your stamina, from running to swinging your sword and rolling. Your stamina quickly recharges, but can put you in a bind if you don’t know how to manage it properly.
Thankfully Fexelea, Samurai_Masurao and a few others dug deeper, compiling a list of these convoluted mechanics in the first Demon’s Souls Wiki in Japanese, and eventually English. Word spread as players banded together to help one another through Demon’s Souls turning it into a cult classic, a phenomenon not seen in gaming since. In short, the Souls community would not exist as it does today, if these hardcore Japanese players had not been the first ones to pioneer the way for the rest of us. In Demon’s Souls players will take on the role of a fallen warrior bound to the Nexus in an attempt to save the land of Boletaria from an endless fog full of demons. Living and dying over and over again, they will slay demons with the aid of legendary heroes of the realm, as they gain power and try to lure The Old One back to sleep and end the nightmare. All those changes, and apparently some surprises, await players in Demon’s Souls when it comes to PlayStation 5 on the console’s launch day, Nov. 12.
Right from the start, you grapple with cruel mechanics, such as navigating mostly in soul form, limiting your HP to just half of its total. Additionally, forget about using any armor heavier than light leather sets due to the equip burden system. Anything weightier leads to cumbersome fat rolls and sluggish stamina recovery, making it nearly impossible to evade enemy attacks. That same philosophy applies to the levels leading up to bosses too.

There’s being faithful to the original, but then there’s implementing features that only have improved the streamlining of their games. All of this, by the way, runs at a crisp 60fps when set to the game’s “performance” mode, which upscales a 1440p signal to something approaching 4K. Milliseconds matter in deadly games like Demon’s Souls, and with a crisp 60fps mode, Bluepoint has given fans some of those precious milliseconds back.
Demon’s Souls Beginner Guide
Any gamers who can’t “get good” will inevitably “get out” rather quickly. Demon’s Souls doesn’t have a bombastic, cutscene-heavy narrative. Instead, players have to explore the grim world and bask in its faint lore. They can shape their experience with the World Tendency system, which can make the game harder or easier depending on player choices and actions. But only the occasional cutscene and boss fight pushes the story forward. Aiding this, kind of, is the new fancy pause screen Sony has implemented on its new console.
One way that Demon’s Souls may actually be easier than Dark Souls is with its healing system. Instead of using a rechargeable flask, Demon’s Souls has players carrying around plants that they can use to restore some health. Dark Souls limits the number of times players can use their flask before they need to rest at a bonfire, but Demon’s Souls players can lug around a significant amount of healing grass with them at all times. The game is still incredibly challenging, but it does alleviate the pressure a little bit. Exploring Demon’s Souls’ world, the ruined kingdom of Boletaria, is immensely rewarding, with players constantly finding helpful items whenever they stray off the beaten path.
Really, the only reason I can find that you shouldn’t buy Demon’s Souls is that you need to have a PS5 first, so if you’re still trying to buy one, you may be waiting a month or four. It’s somewhat fitting that the game which started the “Souls” trend has now been remade, both opening and closing a particular chapter in gaming history. The soundtrack has been rerecorded with a full orchestra, meaning that it loses a lot of the brass and overall sounds far superior to me.
While magic users and some melee builds will be able to play a bit more aggressively, Demon’s Souls just isn’t designed to support that more active style of combat that has defined modern Soulslike games. The first happened when I unlocked the door to one of the game’s first bosses. Excited by my progress, I ran down a stairwell to a nearby shortcut, took a wrong turn, and fell to my death.
Elden Ring is already an immensely difficult game — as was expected from a FromSoftware title — but players found that Shadow of the Erdtree was even a bit too difficult. But Redditors have discovered that there might even be a secret difficulty setting that makes the DLC even tougher. Back in 2019, I wrote about using the RPCS3 emulator to play Demon’s Souls on PC, with a 60 fps patch in place to improve the game’s framerate. It was impressive performance for a PlayStation 3 emulator even with frequent stuttering as it cached shaders, but after seeing the Demon’s Souls remake in motion, it’s hard to go back. Actually playing it cements how much more fun the Souls games can be when they’re built for a smooth, consistent 60 fps, something developer FromSoftware especially struggled with in Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne.
The Demon’s Souls remake developed by Bluepoint is still today one of the best-looking games on PlayStation 5, and it reportedly looks substantially better on PlayStation 5 Pro. Companies have slowly been dipping their toes into a $70 price for new games, so this might be the end of the $60 standard. Hopefully PC games will still get a slight discount in some cases, but regardless, there’s always the next Steam sale.
